I ARE TEH OVERWINNAAR! Or...at least...will be as soon as I win this graphics contest.
Crazily competitive? Nooo...just highly confident in my abilities to win stuff if I actually put my mind to it. (Ok. I'm seriously kidding here, there's a lot of people who are far more skilled than me at just about anything, but I prefer to be optimistic when going into any sort of contest. Looking silly afterward is a small price to pay for how cool I feel while yelling "I ARE TEH OVERWINNAAR")
Anyways, what this is all about. Luke Holzmann is holding an official graphics contest on the Sonlight Students forums, and I shall be entering. There are a lot of really awesome graphic artists out there also, so I'm going to have to work really hard on this. On the plus side, I have a whole 10 days to work on it, whereas most of my previous graphics projects have been thrown together in a matter of hours. On the other hand, my strength is abstract computer generated type stuff. This time I have to use actual pictures. Well...I don't *have* to, but I'm really not sure how to create a wallpaper themed "book" with some swirleys, special effects and layering. =P
So...yeah...My birthday was this past Monday. It was pretty freaking awesome...mostly because Mikey finished reading Brisingr at 3:45 am that morning, leaving me to read it on my birthday. Of course, that necessitated rushing into my room at 3:45 and dropping the book on my bed, announcing that he was finished with it. While I managed a small "Yay" (which I thought was very gracious on my part) I can't say I was altogether pleased at the wakeup.
I finished Brisingr in less than two days. =D I read the 749 page book, kept up on school work and went to several classes and CAP all at the same time. I feel rather accomplished.
Oh, and I read The Hiding Place. Corrie ten Boom was officially just about the most awesome person on the planet. Really very motivational...plus, her accent is just awesome. =D I mentioned that I was reading her book to my parents and apparently they both heard her speak about 30 years ago or something. Pretty cool, yeah?
I also read The Little Prince, which is a much smaller book than I usually read, but it was still very interesting. It was written as a childrens book, but it's really pretty deep. It's a very sweet book on all levels though.
And now I kinda ran out of things to say. My fingers are numb anyways. (it's starting to get cold on this little mountain in Georgia...) So, yeah, I'll try my best to update again soon.
[Note: "Overwinnaar" is not English. Props to anyone who can figure out what language it is...it seems fairly obvious to me, but idk.]

Patience is a virtue...
You all know that saying. It has, without a doubt, been said to you a few times. (or in my case several times a day every day for my whole life) But, you know what? MAYBE THAT VIRTUE ISN'T IN MY SKILL SET.
So...here I am. With one copy of the latest Eragon book. Which I conveniently "wasn't the one who paid for it" and thus don't have the right to read first. Nooo, my brother paid for it. Therefore, he gets the right to read it first. I had NO idea he could read that impossibly slow. He's like a snail reading. I mean, if snails could read...then, like, I think they'd read slow...because they don't seem very smart, and they'd have to crawl from line to line to read it, I guess. Unless they made a special snail book for it, in which case they could probably get away without sliming across the page to read each line because it'd probably be made special like that or something. Food for thought, yes?
Where was I? Oh, right. Eragon. The third book just came out today! We walked into Barnes & Nobel and there they were. Stacked up like little bricks of gold. (they're really colored black and gold, but the concept applies.) My brother bought a copy and I didn't have enough money. He has a job! So now I sit here and wait for him to finish reading all...however many pages are in it? SEE! I know that if I owned the book. That's the first thing I check! How many pages are in the book. It's really very important to know...for some reason.
Heh. I just wrote another blog entry. I also managed to not mention my totally flipping amazing summer in it. Well, suffice to say, it was amazing. Maybe I'll talk about it later.

I'm listening to Celtic rock. =D It's not as weird as you might think. It kinda combines my love of electric guitars and bass drums with my other love of bagpipes and kilts. XD
ok, my brother Mikey brought all his firefighting gear over to the house to get it washed (he doesn't like the washing machine up at the hall for whatever reason) so I took the opportunity to get some crazy awesome photos of the turnout gear.

There's his helmet after he polished it up and all. It looked pretty nice.
Of course, he had to get a fire call right after cleaning it all, so I couldn't pass up getting some pictures of how it looked then.

There's the jacket. That thing's HEAVY.

That poor helmet. XD It's totally covered in ash.
Anyways...there's about as much artistic photography as I can get. While I was at it I got a couple of pictures of me, though. =D

Just a thought...
Recently I took a quiz on the forums. Besides being the most awesome one ever (=D) there were a few questions that got me to really thinking. Namely, "what's the most beautiful thing in the world to you?"
Admittedly, my answer was lame. I don't do spur of the moment questions that are really deep very well. (as a side note, I was at a sleepover and was asked "what's the hardest thing about being a teen?"...that was, uh, sad.) But after thinking about it, the things I think are most beautiful in this world never seem to be what others think are pretty...or even remotely lovable. I do tend to like things that other people think are pretty, too. I can appreciate a flower or a beautiful work of art, but that's not where my heart is.
So now you should be wondering what I really do find beautiful. The most wonderful and beautiful thing to me is love. Love showing up in unexpected places. When I see a person helping another, not expecting anything in return, just because they can, that's beautiful. When we drive past the projects down town, and I see a tough looking teen helping a little kid who's wrecked his bike up off the ground, that's true beauty.
I've never been a big fan of things that were perfect. They make me just sit there and feel awkward, like, "yeah...sure...cute."
I like bars on windows, I like brick walls with writing on them, I like empty streets. Why? Because I know that behind the bars, inside the walls, on the sidewalks, there are people who love others. People who'd give to others. People who are crying for help. I don't care what they look like. I don't care if they have tattoos or piercings. What's truly beautiful in this world is nearly always hidden.
Annnd...there goes my most open and deep blog entry yet. Thus, I give you my thoughts of the day.
